Pakistani authorities have detained 278 members of former prime minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police officials told AFP. The detentions began after the province was placed under emergency rule on Sunday, following days of protests demanding Khan’s release. The PTI-led provincial government has been declared non-functional until security improves, as militant violence also rises near the Afghan border. The party condemned the measures as undemocratic. Khan has been jailed since August 2023 and faces numerous charges, which he denies as politically motivated.
