Paid Mods, Official Platform — The New Frontier for GTA V and Red Dead Mods

In a notable shift for one of gaming’s most influential developers, Rockstar Games has unveiled an official marketplace for game modifications, marking a major change in its relationship with the vibrant modding community. Long known for its iconic franchises like Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar’s move creates a curated digital storefront where creators can share — and in many cases earn money from — their mods and custom content.

The new platform, called Cfx Marketplace, is the culmination of Rockstar’s 2023 acquisition of Cfx.re — the team behind the popular FiveM and RedM modding frameworks that power role-play and custom servers for GTA and Red Dead games. Cfx Marketplace acts as an official mod store, enabling server owners, content creators and role-play communities to browse and license a wide range of tools, assets and modifications. These include props, vehicles, scripts, maps, activities and full-blown gameplay systems that previously were shared informally or hosted on fan-run sites.

Rockstar describes Cfx Marketplace as a curated digital storefront where creators vetted by the company can offer their work to a broader audience. While some mods are free, others come with price tags — in some cases reaching hundreds of dollars — and creators receive a share of the revenue alongside Rockstar. For server hosts and community organizers, this makes it easier to integrate professionally authored content into custom online experiences without building everything from scratch.

Historically, Rockstar was often at odds with modders, especially those running alternative servers or injecting unofficial code into its games. But with the procurement of Cfx.re and the launch of this official marketplace, the company appears to be embracing modding as a long-term part of its ecosystem — a significant departure from prior, more restrictive policies. The phased rollout of Cfx Marketplace aims to refine the platform’s experience for creators and server admins alike, ensuring quality and compatibility before widespread availability.

The implication for players could be far-reaching. Modding has long enriched titles like GTA V with new gameplay modes, enhanced visuals and endless variations on base mechanics. With Rockstar now providing an official, monetized path for these efforts, it may foster more sustainable creative engagement and even influence how custom content evolves in the years ahead. Whether this will spread to future releases like GTA 6 or other Rockstar titles remains to be seen, but for now the Cfx Marketplace stands as a milestone in the company’s relationship with its modding communities.
