P14-Million Smuggling Bust: Contraband-Filled Delivery Van Found Abandoned in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — In a major blow to the illegal tobacco trade in Western Mindanao, law enforcement authorities intercepted more than ₱14 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes following a pre-dawn anti-smuggling operation in Barangay Campo Islam, Zamboanga City.

The contraband was discovered packed inside a delivery van that had been abruptly abandoned on the street by its drivers after they caught sight of approaching law enforcement teams.

The operation unfolded early Sunday morning, July 26, 2026, as part of an intelligence-driven campaign to curb the influx of untaxed and illegally imported goods into the country. The raid was a collaborative effort spearheaded by operatives from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Regional Field Unit 9, working in close coordination with the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and the Zamboanga City Police Station 11.

According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), suspects transporting the cargo managed to evade arrest. Realizing that a multi-agency tactical unit was closing in on their position, the individuals abandoned the delivery van mid-route and fled on foot into the surrounding neighborhood, exploiting the darkness to escape.

While the suspects managed to slip away, their highly lucrative cargo was successfully secured, preventing it from filtering into the local black market. Upon opening the vehicle, authorities discovered a massive cache of assorted illicit cigarettes.

A rigorous, transparent inventory conducted in the presence of local barangay officials confirmed the recovery of 61 master cases of assorted suspected smuggled cigarettes alongside 715 reams of additional tobacco products.

The combined market value of the confiscated tobacco products has been officially estimated at ₱14,081,100.00. The entire haul, along with the impounded delivery van, has been prepared for turnover to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition and destruction in accordance with national customs and anti-smuggling laws.

PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez, Jr. highly commended the joint task force for the swift execution of the operation. He emphasized that such enforcement operations are vital not only for upholding the law but also for safeguarding local economic frameworks.

"This kind of operation shows that when our law enforcement agencies work together, the prevention of illegal activities becomes much more effective," Nartatez said in a translated statement. "This isn't just about confiscating contraband—we are also protecting the livelihoods of legitimate businessmen and the country’s economy."

Though no arrests were made at the scene, the PNP assured the public that the case is far from closed. Investigators have launched a comprehensive follow-up operation to trace the vehicle's ownership, identify the individuals who fled, and dismantle the broader smuggling ring operating within the region.
