Overnight Assault on Kyiv: Russian Strikes Bombard the Capital, Injuring Residents and Wrecking Infrastructure

KYIV — Russian forces launched a multi-wave overnight combined aerial bombardment targeting Ukraine’s capital and surrounding districts, triggering continuous air raid sirens and sending residents into bomb shelters. The attack, which involved a barrage of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and strike drones, left multiple civilians injured and caused extensive damage to residential buildings, utility networks, and municipal infrastructure.

In the early morning hours, explosions echoed across Kyiv as Ukrainian air defense units actively engaged incoming aerial targets. The onslaught sent falling debris and direct strikes crashing down across several city districts, resulting in widespread structural damage and fires.

In Solomianskyi and Sviatoshynskyi, powerful blast waves shattered windows, compromised high-rise residential facades, and ignited blazes in multi-story apartment buildings, prompting emergency teams to immediately clear rubble and rescue trapped residents. Meanwhile, falling wreckage in Dniprovskyi hit non-residential areas, damaging local warehouses, office spaces, and commercial structures near major transport routes.

In Holosiivskyi, shelling hit administrative and educational facilities, sparking localized fires that were quickly brought under control by State Emergency Service (SES) firefighters.

Emergency medical responders confirmed that at least seven people were treated for severe blast injuries, shrapnel wounds, and acute stress reactions in the immediate aftermath, with casualty counts rising as rescue operations progressed across affected neighborhoods.

The overnight barrage specifically targeted essential municipal infrastructure. Impacts and heavy shockwaves affected energy and utility networks, leading to temporary water pressure drops on the Right Bank and brief service disruptions on the Left Bank of the Dnipro River following damage to local water utility facilities (Kyivvodokanal).

Repair crews worked through the morning to stabilize municipal grid nodes and restore water pressure to all districts. Local energy providers also deployed rapid-response units to repair severed overhead lines and commercial power substations.

According to statements from the Ukrainian Air Force, the attack was executed using a combination of long-range strike drones (including Shahed-type and jet-powered UAV models) launched alongside sea- and ground-based ballistic missiles. While air defense systems successfully intercepted a significant majority of incoming threats, the sheer volume of ordinance and high-speed decoys created severe risk from falling wreckage and direct impacts.
