Oshawa Crash Sends Daycare Worker, Five Children To Hospital, Vehicle Hits Group, Witnesses Describe Chaos

Oshawa, Canada— It happened during a morning walk. A daycare worker and five children were hospitalized Tuesday after a vehicle collided with pedestrians in Oshawa. Police closed the street for hours.

The crash was reported just before 10 a.m. on a residential road near Ritson Road and Olive Avenue. The group was walking on the sidewalk with a daycare provider. Witnesses said a sedan mounted the curb and hit them. Strollers and bags were scattered.

Durham Regional Police said six people were taken to hospital. The injuries ranged from serious to moderate. The children are all under six. The worker, a woman in her 30s, suffered head and leg injuries. None of the injuries were initially deemed life-threatening.

The driver, a 62-year-old man, stayed at the scene. He was questioned by traffic investigators. Police said impairment was not immediately suspected. They are looking at medical condition and mechanical factors. No charges have been laid yet.

"We had multiple children involved, which makes this call particularly difficult," a Durham Regional Police spokesperson said. "Our collision unit is reconstructing exactly how the vehicle left the roadway."

Parents rushed to the area after daycare staff called. Police set up a reunification point at a nearby community center. The daycare center said all families were notified. Counselors were offered to other children and staff.

Neighbors said the street is usually quiet. One resident said cars often take the corner fast. The city said it will review sidewalk and traffic calming measures at that location. Speed data will be collected this week.

The children were kept at Lakeridge Health Oshawa for observation. Hospital staff said they would remain overnight. The Ministry of Education was notified because a licensed daycare was involved. Inspectors will check compliance.

Police asked for dashcam and doorbell video from the area. The investigation remains open.
