Osaka, Japan— A convenience store robbery in Osaka turned violent on October 20, leaving the store clerk murdered after an attacker stabbed him during a late-night holdup and fled with cash.
The robbery occurred at around 2:10 a.m. at a Lawson convenience store in Naniwa Ward. The clerk, a 24-year-old part-time worker, was alone at the register. Security footage shows a man wearing a black cap and mask entering, brandishing a knife. He demanded money from the register. The clerk complied. Then the suspect stabbed him multiple times.
Emergency calls came from a customer who entered minutes later and found the clerk bleeding behind the counter. Paramedics arrived within 10 minutes. The clerk was taken to Naniwa Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:15 a.m. Police said the cause of death was blood loss from stab wounds to the chest and abdomen. The suspect took approximately 50,000 yen and ran toward a nearby station.
Osaka Prefectural Police sealed the store and began a manhunt. More than 50 officers were deployed to review CCTV from the area. The suspect is described as about 170 centimeters tall, wearing dark clothing and a surgical mask. A knife believed to be the weapon was found in a trash bin two blocks away. Forensic teams are testing it for fingerprints and DNA.
Convenience store robberies are rare but not unheard of in Japan. Stores operate 24 hours with minimal staff, often one clerk overnight. Workers are trained not to resist, but violence still occurs. The clerk, identified as a university student working a night shift to pay tuition, had worked at the store for six months. His family was notified early morning.
The Lawson chain said it will provide counseling to employees and review overnight staffing. The company said it is cooperating with police and that safety is its top priority. Other convenience store chains in Osaka said they will increase patrols and install additional security cameras. Some stores are considering double staffing at night, a costly measure.
Residents in Naniwa Ward said they are shocked. The neighborhood is busy, near tourist areas and nightlife. A neighbor who lives above the store said she heard shouting but thought it was drunks. "This area is usually safe," she said. "Now we are afraid." A small memorial of flowers appeared outside the store by morning.
Police said the suspect remains at large. They asked anyone with information to contact Osaka Police. The investigation is ongoing.
