Ortaköy’s Silent Threat: A Family, Street Food, and Suspicion

In the gentle hum of Istanbul’s Bosphorus shoreline, where seagulls wheel above water and the Ortaköy bridge arches gracefully into the sky, a family’s laughter once mingled with the salt air and the call to prayer. But that laughter fell silent. A vacation meant to be a joyful escape has become a haunting mystery, after a mother and her two young children died and their father fights for his life.

According to Turkish officials, the family — Turkish by origin but living in Germany — fell gravely ill after sampling street food in the busy waterfront neighborhood of Ortaköy. Reports say they ate mussels, “kumpir” (stuffed baked potatoes), and kokoreç, traditional grilled lamb offal. On November 12 they began vomiting and suffering nausea; by November 13, both children — aged 6 and 3 — had died in hospital. The mother followed the next day. The father remains in intensive care.

At first, suspicion centered on food poisoning. Investigators collected samples from the eateries where the family ate, and four people were initially detained. But as the probe deepened, a darker possibility emerged: a chemical leak in the hotel where they stayed.

Authorities now suspect aluminum phosphide — a powerful pesticide — might have been misused in the building. According to the investigation, pest control workers had treated a ground-floor room earlier, and the toxic gas may have seeped into the family’s room via the bathroom ventilation system.

As the tragic case unfolded, the hotel was evacuated, and 11 people have now been detained. Samples from bedding, linens, and even bottled water are being tested. Meanwhile, investigators noted that some of the pest-control workers involved may have lacked proper certification.

Medical experts have warned that chemicals like aluminum phosphide leave little room for error — inhaling its fumes can be lethal, and there is no well-known antidote. The tragedy has sparked growing concern about safety standards in budget hotels, particularly when it comes to disinfection and pest control.

For the family, a holiday that began with promise has turned into a loss that is deeply personal, and for Istanbul — a beautiful, crowded city — the case may force a reckoning. How did a family’s food tour become a deadly chemical trap? And who will be held accountable?
