Opposition Rallies in Taipei Over Tainted Cooking Oil Scandal

Thousands of people rallied in Taipei on Saturday, organized by the main opposition Kuomintang, to demand accountability over a tainted cooking oil scandal. Protesters gathered on Ketagalan Boulevard, criticizing the government’s handling of the issue after large quantities of soy-based cooking oil were found to contain excessive benzo[a]pyrene. The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration said more than 1,300 businesses were affected and over 500 products were pulled from shelves. Both central and local authorities faced mounting scrutiny as recalls expanded.
