One Mountaineer Dead After Alpine Hiking Accident Near Mont Blanc, Italy Rescue Teams Recover Body

Courmayeur, Italy— One mountaineer died after an alpine hiking accident near Mont Blanc on November 1, 2026, when he fell from a narrow trail on the Italian side of the massif during gusty conditions.

The accident happened around 11 a.m. on the trail leading toward Rifugio Torino, above 3,000 meters. The hiker, part of a group of three, slipped on an icy patch and fell about 80 meters down a snow-covered slope. His companions called mountain rescue via radio.

Valle d'Aosta Alpine Rescue deployed a helicopter despite strong winds. Rescuers were winched down to the slope. They found the mountaineer with severe trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was lifted out by helicopter and taken to Courmayeur.

"He was well-equipped but the trail was icy. Wind made balance difficult. Falls in this sector are often fatal," a rescue coordinator said from the base. He said the victim was Italian, in his 40s, with experience in alpine hiking.

The Mont Blanc massif straddles France and Italy and sees heavy traffic year-round. Autumn brings unstable conditions, with ice forming overnight and melting by day. Rockfall risk increases. Accidents are common on exposed traverses.

Italian Alpine Club officials said the trail had been flagged for caution due to verglas. Crampons were recommended but not mandatory. The group had crampons but the victim was not wearing them at the time of the slip, according to initial reports.

Two other hikers in the group were escorted down by rescuers. They were treated for shock and minor frostbite at a mountain hut. Their statements were taken by Carabinieri mountain police.

The prosecutor's office in Aosta opened a routine file to document the accident. No criminal liability is suspected. The trail section will remain open but with additional warning signs.

Families of the victim were notified Saturday evening. The Alpine Rescue urged hikers to check weather forecasts, carry ice axes and crampons, and avoid exposed routes in high winds.

Rescue teams said winds will remain strong through Sunday. Hiking above 2,500 meters is discouraged until conditions improve.
