Adelaide, Australia— One man is dead and two others are wounded after a late-night stabbing erupted outside a nightclub on Hindley Street, scattering crowds and locking down the strip.
The attack happened at about 1:20 a.m. Saturday. Police said a dispute between two groups spilled out of the venue onto the footpath. Witnesses reported shouting, then men falling. One man collapsed near the entrance with a chest wound.
Paramedics found three men injured. A 22-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene despite CPR. Two others, aged 23 and 26, were taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital with stab wounds to the abdomen and leg. One is in critical condition. The other is stable.
The street was closed between two intersections. Forensic officers marked blood spots and collected a knife believed to have been dropped during the melee. Dozens of clubgoers were held behind cordons to give statements. Some were still inside when the doors were shut.
"We have a fatal altercation that moved from inside to outside very quickly," a detective inspector said at the scene. "There were many witnesses. We are working to piece together who did what."
Police said no arrests had been made by early morning but several persons of interest had been identified from CCTV. The venue's cameras and nearby street cameras captured much of the incident. Officers are reviewing footage frame by frame.
Hindley Street has seen a rise in late-night assaults this year. Venue security said they had ejected two men earlier for aggressive behavior. Whether those men returned is part of the investigation. Liquor Licensing officers attended to check compliance logs.
The deceased man's family was notified at dawn. Support officers were assigned. The two injured men are expected to be interviewed once cleared by doctors.
The precinct reopened around 6 a.m. Police urged anyone who was in the area between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. to come forward.
