Perth, Australia— One person is dead and another is in hospital after a domestic altercation turned violent inside a suburban home, prompting a major police response late Friday.
The incident occurred around 11:10 p.m. in a house on a quiet cul-de-sac in Morley. Neighbors reported shouting, then a call for help. Police arrived within minutes. They found two people with serious injuries inside the home.
A 38-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A 42-year-old man was taken to Royal Perth Hospital with stab wounds to his chest and arms. He is in critical but stable condition. Police said the two knew each other and lived at the same address.
Detectives cordoned off the house and the front yard. Forensic officers worked inside through the night. A knife was recovered from the kitchen area. Neighbors were asked to stay inside while officers searched the rear lane for other items.
"We are dealing with a domestic incident that has had a fatal outcome," a detective sergeant said outside. "We are speaking to family and neighbors to understand the events leading up to this."
Neighbors described the couple as keeping to themselves. One said she heard arguments in the past week but nothing that suggested imminent danger. Another said he saw police at the address two months ago for a welfare check. That prior visit is being reviewed.
The WA Police family violence unit was notified. Support services were offered to extended family members who arrived at the scene. The street remained closed until early morning while evidence was collected.
Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public. No charges had been laid by dawn as investigators waited to speak with the surviving man. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Residents left flowers near the cordon. The investigation continues.
