Lagos, Nigeria— One person was killed and two others injured on Friday after a tanker collided with a commercial bus in Ikorodu, Lagos, officials said.
The crash happened along the busy Ikorodu Road corridor. The tanker, laden with fuel, was attempting to turn when it struck the bus. The impact pushed the bus into a drainage channel.
One passenger in the bus died at the scene. Two others were pulled out with serious injuries. LASTMA officers and police arrived quickly to prevent a fuel spill from igniting.
“A tanker and a commercial bus were involved in a collision in Ikorodu,” a traffic official said. “One death was recorded and two persons were injured. The tanker driver has been taken into custody.”
Witnesses said the tanker was speeding and braked late. The bus was fully loaded with commuters heading toward Mile 12. Passengers jumped from windows as fuel began leaking.
Emergency responders cordoned off the area and diverted traffic through inner streets. Traders closed shops nearby for fear of fire. The tanker was eventually towed after transloading its content.
Ikorodu Road has seen repeated tanker accidents. Residents complain about reckless driving and lack of enforcement. The Lagos State Government said it would review movement of heavy trucks during peak hours.
The two injured were taken to Ikorodu General Hospital. Doctors said one is in critical condition. The body of the deceased was moved to a morgue.
Police said investigations continue. The road has been reopened but fuel cleanup is still underway.
