South Windsor, Australia— One person died after a house fire tore through a home in South Windsor overnight, NSW Emergency Services confirmed Wednesday. Crews were still damping down hotspots by morning.
The call came in just after 11 p.m. for a weatherboard house on the western edge of the suburb. Neighbors reported heavy smoke and flames through the roof. Fire and Rescue NSW dispatched four trucks. Police from Hawkesbury district closed the street.
Firefighters found the single-storey home fully involved. The front door was locked. Windows had blown out from heat. Crews entered through the rear after knocking down flames with hose lines. Inside they found one occupant.
Paramedics attempted resuscitation on the lawn. The person was declared dead at the scene. Police said the victim was a local resident who lived alone in the property. Formal identification has not yet been released.
The fire destroyed two bedrooms and the kitchen. The roof collapsed over the living area. Heat damage extended to a neighboring fence and a parked car. No other homes were evacuated.
Investigators from the fire investigation unit arrived at first light. They are examining electrical circuits, a heater in the lounge and smoking materials. The house had a working smoke alarm, but neighbors said they heard it only after smoke was visible from outside.
A police spokesperson said the death was not being treated as suspicious at this stage. The area was cordoned off for forensic examination. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Residents on the street described hearing popping sounds. One said she smelled burning plastic before sirens arrived. The Hawkesbury council offered support to neighbors affected by smoke.
Fire and Rescue NSW said winter heating remains a leading cause of house fires in the region. The property remains under guard pending a full structural assessment.
