On a Day of Remembrance, a Community Confronts Another Loss

There are mornings when the weight of history and the fragility of the present meet in the most unexpected of places—a shopping center parking lot, a community walk, a moment of gathering meant to honor what was lost. On Wednesday, as Tsawwassen First Nation held its walk for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a vehicle struck four pedestrians in the parking lot of Tsawwassen Mills. Two people died. The walk was cancelled.

The collision occurred around 10:25 a.m. on the lands of Tsawwassen First Nation, south of Vancouver near the U.S.-Canada border . Delta Police said preliminary information indicated the driver may have experienced a medical emergency before the collision . Four pedestrians were struck. Two died from their injuries, and the remaining two were treated at the scene by B.C. Emergency Health Services and transported to hospital .

Police were careful to emphasize that the incident does not appear to be related to the Truth and Reconciliation Day walk that was taking place at the same time on Tsawwassen First Nation lands . "Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this tragic incident," Delta Police said in a statement .

The scene was one of significant emergency response. CBC reporters on the ground described seeing more than a dozen ambulances, additional emergency vehicles, and two helicopters circling overhead. About 100 Tsawwassen First Nation members had gathered on the east side of the mall, some lying on the ground . The area around Tsawwassen Mills was cordoned off with yellow tape, and police asked the public to avoid the area, including roads leading to the B.C. Ferries terminal, one of the two main hubs connecting the mainland to Vancouver Island .

The Tsawwassen First Nation had planned a community walk followed by the unveiling of a house post in honor of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The event was meant to be a time of remembrance and gathering, with participants encouraged to wear orange in support of reconciliation . Federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson had attended the walk. His spokesperson said he and his team were not near the incident when it occurred and were not injured .

The investigation remains in its early stages. Police said there is no ongoing risk to public safety, and officers are working to determine all the circumstances surrounding the collision . Tsawwassen First Nation expressed gratitude to Delta Police, emergency responders, and community members who assisted, and asked for respect for families as response efforts continued . On a day meant to honor children who never came home from residential schools, a community was left to hold another kind of grief.
