Oaxaca Mountain Highway Tragedy: Passenger Bus Plummets Off Curve Into Canyon Resulting In 12 Fatalities

Oaxaca City, Mexico—At least 12 people died Saturday morning when a passenger bus plunged hundreds of feet off a winding mountain highway in the southern state of Oaxaca.

The commuter bus was navigating a notoriously sharp curve on Federal Highway 175 when the driver reportedly lost control. The vehicle broke through a flimsy metal guardrail and tumbled down the steep, rocky slope into the canyon below.

Witnesses in passing vehicles alerted emergency services immediately, but the remote location severely hampered rescue efforts. State civil protection units and local Red Cross volunteers rappelled down the precipitous terrain to reach the wreckage.

Rescue workers found the bus completely destroyed upon impact with the canyon floor. Paramedics confirmed that 12 passengers died instantly, while more than 20 others sustained serious injuries and required extraction from the twisted metal.

Medical helicopters from the state government airlifted the most critical survivors to trauma centers in Oaxaca City. The remaining injured were transported by ambulance to nearby rural hospitals, where officials reported many remained in grave condition.

Federal highway patrol officers cordoned off the accident site, causing significant traffic backups on the vital mountain artery connecting Oaxaca City to the coast. Investigators are examining weather conditions and potential mechanical failure as contributing factors.

Grief-stricken relatives gathered at the base of the canyon seeking news of loved ones as forensic teams prepared to recover the deceased. The tragedy underscores the extreme hazards posed by Mexico's aging infrastructure and perilous mountain roads.

Recovery operations continued into the afternoon as heavy cranes were mobilized to hoist the remains of the bus from the ravine. Governor Jara issued a statement expressing condolences and promising state support for the victims' families.

State prosecutors have opened a formal investigation to determine criminal liability in the devastating crash.
