Northern Thailand Flash Flood Tragedy: Three Dead After Swollen River Sweeps Away Rural Highway Vehicles

Chiang Mai, Thailand—A violent flash flood surged across a rural highway in northern Thailand on October 14, 2026, tearing multiple vehicles off the road surface and killing three commuters.

Raging runoff descended from surrounding mountain slopes at 11:20 AM following hours of unrelenting rainfall, inundating a low-lying two-lane asphalt highway beneath two meters of fast-moving mudwater.

The sudden torrent caught northbound traffic unprepared, flipping a pickup truck and pushing two sedans off the embankment into an adjacent swollen river basin.

Rescuers from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) deployed motorized rubber boats and high-angle rope teams to reach submerged vehicles pinned against riverbank trees.

Divers retrieved two bodies from a overturned passenger car lodged in heavy brush a kilometer downstream, while emergency teams extracted a third victim from a submerged truck cab.

"Water levels along the highway rose over a meter in less than ten minutes," stated a DDPM regional operations coordinator at the scene. "Currents were strong enough to strip the asphalt topcoat directly off the roadbed."

Transport officials closed a 15-kilometer stretch of the rural corridor, redirecting regional freight traffic to higher elevation bypass routes as heavy machinery cleared mud and uprooted trees.

Local residents criticized regional highway infrastructure, arguing that undersized culverts along mountain road sections frequently choke during peak monsoon squalls.

Highway police maintain checkpoints along flooded access points, warning motorists against attempting to cross submerged low-water bridges during ongoing rain warnings.

Disaster response teams remain stationed along the riverbanks with sonar-equipped boats to sweep downstream reaches and confirm no additional submerged vehicles remain unaccounted for.
