Northern Thailand Devastated: Rescue Teams Hunt for Thirty Missing After Deadly Weekend Landslides Strike

Bangkok, Thailand— Floodwaters breached the outer northern districts of the capital early Saturday morning, displacing thousands as rescue crews scoured mud-choked provinces for 30 missing people. Eight bodies have already been recovered from landslide debris along the Mae Sot-Tak highway.

The highway collapsed just before dawn. Deep fissures split the asphalt. Commuters and cargo transport stalled at the border, severing a critical economic artery.

More than 1.1 million residents across 30 provinces are currently dealing with the immediate aftermath of the deluge. Rainfall intensified late last week, overwhelming local drainage systems and forcing emergency evacuations in low-lying agricultural zones.

"The ground simply gave way," a local emergency response coordinator said. "We had no warning. People were sleeping when the mud came down."

Evacuation centers in the north are operating beyond capacity. The military deployed heavy machinery to clear debris, but persistent downpours hamper progress. Helicopters remain grounded.

Water levels in the Chao Phraya River basin continue to rise. Bangkok municipal workers have spent the past 48 hours reinforcing flood walls with sandbags and activating emergency water pumps to defend the central business district.

Residents in the outer suburbs are already wading through knee-deep water. Small businesses shuttered. The stench of stagnant water fills the air in districts like Lat Krabang, where locals traverse flooded streets daily.

Meteorological warnings project unstable weather, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall across the northern and central regions through early next week. The ground is fully saturated. Any additional rain will immediately run off into already swollen waterways.

Emergency services are prioritizing the search for the 30 individuals trapped beneath the mud in Tak province. Officials acknowledge the window for finding survivors is rapidly closing.
