No Flights, No Answers: Tourists Await Escape From Yemen’s Outpost

Hundreds of foreign visitors — including American citizens — are currently stranded on the Yemeni island of Socotra, a remote destination in the Indian Ocean, after flights were abruptly suspended amid escalating tensions and fighting on the mainland.

Socotra, known for its unique biodiversity and UNESCO‑listed landscapes, lies about 350 km south of Yemen’s mainland and had become a growing tourism destination in recent years. The U.S. Department of State has warned against all travel to Yemen, including Socotra, and confirmed it has received reports of flight cancellations and closures of entry points, noting that routine and emergency consular services are limited or unavailable due to the country’s ongoing conflict.

Tourists on Socotra have described conditions as physically safe but uncertain, with many unsure when they might be able to return home. Some are exploring alternative ways out, including sea travel to Oman and onward commercial flights, though such options carry their own risks.

Diplomatic missions from affected countries have been in contact with governments in Saudi Arabia and Yemen to seek assistance in arranging safe departures, but no firm timeline for the resumption of flights has been announced as the security situation remains fluid.
