Canada’s police said they have found no evidence linking the government of India to the June 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The statement came amid a diplomatic dispute between Canada and India, where Canada previously raised allegations of possible government links but India rejected them and called the claims politically motivated.

The killing, which took place in Surrey, British Columbia, has driven escalating tensions between the two countries, including reciprocal diplomatic expulsions and a widening row over intelligence and investigation findings. Canada’s position has been that credible leads and investigative work indicate a serious level of concern, while India has maintained that Canada has not provided substantiating evidence.

Canada police said their investigation continues, but based on the evidence currently gathered, they do not have material tying Indian state actors directly to Nijjar’s death.
