Nighttime Collision: 39-Year-Old Hospitalized After Electric Skateboard Crash in Hervey Bay

HERVEY BAY, Queensland — A quiet coastal evening turned into a tragic scene on Wednesday night after a high-speed collision between two e-mobility devices left a 39-year-old man dead and a 30-year-old man fighting for his life in the hospital.

The fatal incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, along the popular Boat Harbour Drive bicycle corridor in Urangan.

According to Queensland Police, the tragedy unfolded when the two riders collided head-on while traveling along the dedicated bike corridor. The e-scooter rider, a 39-year-old man from Scarness, sustained catastrophic, life-threatening injuries upon impact and was tragically pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

Meanwhile, the e-skateboarder, a 30-year-old man from Urangan, survived the initial collision but suffered critical, severe injuries; he was stabilized by paramedics before being rushed to Hervey Bay Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

Forensic Crash Unit investigators closed off a section of the corridor between Ann Street and Robert Street for several hours to examine the debris and piece together the exact trajectory and speed of both riders.

This tragedy unfolds against a backdrop of increasing scrutiny surrounding personal mobility devices (PMDs) in Australia.

Queensland recently rolled out some of the strictest e-mobility reforms in the nation, granting police expanded powers to crack down on illegal, modified, or recklessly operated devices. Since these laws went into effect, state police have already seized over 100 illegal devices and issued more than 400 traffic infringement notices.

Local residents have long raised concerns about the speeds reached by both modified e-scooters and electric skateboards on shared pedestrian and cycling pathways, particularly during poorly lit nighttime hours.

The Queensland Police Service is urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or who has relevant dash cam or CCTV footage from the Boat Harbour Drive area around 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, to come forward.
