KYIV, Ukraine — A massive wave of Russian ballistic missiles and attack drones slammed into Ukraine’s capital and surrounding communities overnight on August 5, 2026, killing at least 15 people, injuring 51 others, and setting residential towers, warehouses, and industrial infrastructure ablaze across Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast.
The overnight barrage marked the third large-scale aerial attack on the capital region in less than a week, underscoring a sharp escalation in Russian strikes as Ukrainian defenses struggle under a critical shortage of air defense interceptors.
The assault began shortly after midnight when air raid sirens wailed across Kyiv, followed by a series of heavy explosions as ballistic missiles struck multiple districts.
According to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (DSNS) and Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the heaviest loss of life occurred in the broader Kyiv region, where 14 people were killed and 27 injured. In the city itself, one person was killed and 24 others were wounded, with at least 15 people hospitalized—four in critical condition.
Emergency rescue crews responded to fires and structural damage across at least seven distinct locations in the capital alone. In the Obolonskyi District, a direct missile strike hit a 20-story residential apartment building, igniting a high-rise inferno that trapped residents on upper floors. Meanwhile, in the Holosiivskyi District, part of a home was destroyed, emergency teams pulled two survivors from the rubble of a collapsed warehouse, and a damaged industrial site triggered a brief ammonia leak that personnel quickly isolated.
Additionally, flaming debris in the Desnianskyi and Sviatoshynskyi Districts set major logistics centers and warehouse complexes ablaze, filling the morning sky with heavy black smoke and prompting authorities to issue high air pollution warnings across the capital.
Outside the city center, strikes devastated industrial and commercial hubs in the Brovary, Bucha, and Fastiv districts, destroying manufacturing plants and logistics centers.
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched 143 total aerial weapons during the barrage, comprising 24 Iskander-M and S-400 ballistic missiles, four Zircon and Oniks anti-ship cruise missiles, and 115 Shahed attack drones and decoy UAVs.
While Ukrainian units managed to shoot down or electronically suppress 98 drones, air defense forces were unable to intercept any of the 28 incoming missiles due to severe ammunition constraints. Strikes and falling debris were reported at over 32 locations across the region.
Following the overnight disaster, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated his urgent call to Western partners for immediate deliveries of air defense interceptors, specifically for U.S.-made Patriot systems.
"Every delayed delivery of air defense systems costs innocent human lives," Ukrainian officials warned, as emergency crews continued to sift through burning rubble into Wednesday morning in search of missing residents.
