Night of Terror: Eight Dead as Russian Airstrike Barrage Devastates Dnipropetrovsk

DNIPROPETROVSK OBLAST, UKRAINE — A relentless wave of Russian overnight strikes has left a trail of death and destruction across Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, ending a brief, fragile ceasefire with a devastating toll on civilians. Following the expiration of a U.S.-mediated truce, Russian forces launched approximately 30 targeted strikes across three districts, resulting in at least eight fatalities and 11 injuries.

The strikes, which took place late Tuesday evening and into early Wednesday, May 13, 2026, shattered the "partial silence" of a three-day ceasefire. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Russia chose to end the truce with a barrage of over 200 drones across the country, though Dnipropetrovsk bore some of the most significant civilian losses.

The Synelnykove District emerged as the hardest-hit area, where strikes on the Dubovyky and Mykolaivka communities claimed the lives of six civilians and damaged over 20 homes. In Kryvyi Rih, a drone attack on an apartment building killed a 65-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man, while also injuring four others—including a nine-month-old baby girl who tragically lost her leg in the blast.

Additionally, the Nikopol District saw five communities, including the city of Nikopol itself, endure heavy fire that devastated infrastructure, vehicles, and private residences, leaving three people injured, including two 16-year-olds.

The overnight campaign was not limited to residential areas. In Kryvyi Rih, the strikes successfully targeted industrial facilities, a gas pipeline, and critical infrastructure. Regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha reported that medical teams are currently struggling to provide care for the 11 wounded, several of whom remain in critical or moderate condition.

President Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, particularly the attack on his hometown of Kryvyi Rih, describing them as "cynical and devoid of all military logic". He emphasized that the international community must maintain and strengthen pressure on Moscow, as the resumption of violence highlights Russia's refusal to pursue a lasting peace.

As of Wednesday morning, residents in several districts are assessing the damage to over 30 homes and vital energy facilities. The local administration has warned that the death toll could still rise as rubble is cleared and rescue operations continue in the hardest-hit communities.
