On August 25, 2025, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) dropped a major directive that could reshape the future of payments and even crypto adoption in Africa’s biggest economy.
The order? 👉 All banks, mobile money operators, fintechs, and payment providers must migrate to ISO 20022 messaging standards and geo-tag all payment terminals. 👉 Deadline: October 31, 2025.
Why This Is a Big Deal
1. Global Standardization – ISO 20022 is the same messaging system being rolled out worldwide, used by SWIFT and international banks. By adopting it, Nigeria plugs directly into the global financial rails.
2. Better Data & Transparency – Every payment must carry accurate information: payer ID, payee ID, merchant details, and location data. This makes fraud harder and compliance stronger.
3. Crypto Bridge Potential – ISO 20022 is designed for interoperability, meaning it’s easier to integrate with blockchain-based payment systems like XRP, Stellar, and other ISO 20022-ready digital assets.
4. Mandatory Geo-Tagging – Every point-of-sale or payment terminal will now be location-tracked. This adds accountability, prevents ghost merchants, and could help regulators trace illicit transactions.
