New Zealand Has English as One of Its Official Languages

Contrary to claims that English is the sole official language, New Zealand’s official-language framework includes English, te reo Māori, and New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL). English has long been widely used in government and daily life, while te reo Māori was granted official status in 1987. NZSL became an official language in 2006 through the New Zealand Sign Language Act. The arrangement supports access to public services, education, and legal settings using the recognised languages.
