Meanwhile, beneath the grasses and blossoms of a Hawaiian island, a small all-black native bee, Hylaeus paumako, was added to scientific records — the first new bee species on that island in more than a century, underscoring how even familiar landscapes can still yield surprises.

These five discoveries — ocean dweller, live-birthing toads, mountain marsupial, forest bat, and island bee — are but glimpses into the year’s broader scientific harvest.
