New Stabbings, Overdoses and Fires Raise Safety Concerns at Australian Immigration Detention Centres

A new spate of stabbings, overdoses, drug use and fires at Australian immigration detention centres has raised concerns about safety and legal compliance, according to internal documents. The records suggest the government may be in breach of laws intended to protect detainees and staff. At Sydney’s Villawood centre, eight fires were reportedly lit between February and May. The incidents have renewed scrutiny of Management and Training Corporation, the U.S. private prison company awarded Australia’s $2.3 billion detention contract in late 2024. The government has faced questions over security failures.
