New Mexico launches investigation of forced sterilization of Native American women

New Mexico has initiated an investigation into the forced sterilization of Native American women, a troubling practice that occurred in the 1970s when thousands were sterilized without their informed consent. New Mexico launches investigation of forced sterilization of Native American women

The state of New Mexico has officially launched an investigation into the forced sterilization practices targeting Native American women, which reportedly took place during the 1970s under the auspices of the Indian Health Service (IHS). The measure, passed by state legislators, mandates the Indian Affairs Department and the Commission on the Status of Women to examine the scope and impact of these coerced sterilizations.

State Senator Linda Lopez, one of the sponsors of the legislation, emphasized the importance of acknowledging these historical atrocities, stating, "It’s important for New Mexico to understand the atrocities that took place within the borders of our state." The committee's findings are expected to be reported to the governor by the end of 2027.

This investigation is timely, as other states, such as Vermont and California, have already taken steps to address similar injustices. Vermont established a truth and reconciliation commission for marginalized groups, while California initiated reparations for individuals sterilized without consent in state facilities.

Historically, many women, such as Jean Whitehorse, faced devastating experiences during sterilization procedures. In her case, after being hospitalized for an emergency surgery, she unknowingly underwent a tubal ligation, leading to personal struggles and a broader realization of the lack of autonomy faced by many women in her community.

Despite the spotlight on these past abuses, the federal government has largely remained silent, with the GAO reporting on the issue in the 1970s, but without further acknowledgment of the systemic sterilizations that occurred. This lack of accountability has prompted advocates, like professor Sarah Deer, to demand recognition and action.

The investigation aims to provide a platform for victims to share their stories, although it must navigate the sensitivities of re-traumatization. The effects of these practices are still felt today as many young Native American women approach health care providers with mistrust due to fears of losing their reproductive rights.

As this inquiry unfolds, it represents a crucial step toward reconciling a painful chapter in U.S. history and highlights the need for continued advocacy for marginalized communities. Without cooperation from federal authorities, the efforts to uncover the full extent of these abuses may remain limited, but the state’s commitment marks a significant shift toward justice and healing for Native American women.
