New 1,000 Euro Banknote in the Works: ECB Unveils Shortlisted Designs

Finland is not issuing a “new 1,000 euro note” on its own—euro banknotes are standardized across the euro area, and current denominations top out at €500. What’s happening instead is the ECB’s redesign process for future euro banknotes: it has shortlisted design concepts under themes “European culture” and “Rivers and birds” and launched a public survey. The ECB expects to choose a final design around year-end 2026, with new notes entering circulation in subsequent years.
