Nature’s Fury: 9 Dead After Relentless Heavy Rains Trigger Massive Landslides Across Nagaland

KOHIMA, NAGALAND — Continuous, relentless monsoon downpours have triggered a wave of catastrophic landslides, mudslides, and flash floods across Nagaland, claiming at least nine lives and leaving multiple people injured or missing. The extreme weather, driven by an upper cyclonic circulation over central Assam, has completely isolated towns, flattened infrastructure, and submerged agricultural lands.

The northern district of Mon has emerged as the epicenter of the crisis, where a sudden cloudburst dumped a staggering 137 mm of rainfall in a short window.

The disaster struck with devastating speed between 6:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 as torrential rains caused hillsides to give way in over ten separate locations within Mon town. At least 45 houses were obliterated or washed away as mud and debris tore through residential neighborhoods.

At least nine fatalities have been confirmed, with five occurring in a single catastrophic landslide at Shantham Ward. Rescue teams, including the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) and local emergency workers, have been working frantically to clear the rubble. Several individuals remain trapped beneath collapsed structures, and four others are still officially listed as missing.

"Mon town is completely cut off right now," stated Mon Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak. "The roads connecting the district headquarters from Tizit and Naginimora are submerged and blocked, and an alternative route is unusable due to a collapsed bridge. Our primary focus is locating those still buried."

While Mon has faced the brunt of the casualties, the destruction extends across the state. Significant landslides and severe flooding have been reported in Wokha, Mokokchung, and Chümoukedima districts, where vital infrastructure has been heavily compromised. Beyond the immense human toll, the floods have devastated farming livelihoods, killing dozens of livestock and mithuns (local cattle).

A relief camp has been established at the Konyak Union office in Mon town to provide shelter for the displaced, though many families have sought temporary refuge with relatives.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed profound grief over the loss of lives and assured the public that the government is monitoring the crisis in real-time. The state government has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹4 lakh (400,000 rupees) for the next of kin of each deceased individual and ₹74,000 for those who sustained injuries.

The immediate future remains perilous. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) alongside the NSDMA has maintained strict Red and Orange weather alerts for the region, warning that the intense monsoon conditions are likely to persist for the next two to three days. Citizens in landslide-prone hill areas and low-lying river plains have been strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and evacuate to safer ground if necessary.
