Nagano Mountain Highway Disaster: Tourist Bus Skids Off Wet Road, Leaving One Dead

Nagano, Japan—One passenger died and fourteen others sustained injuries when a commercial tour bus skidded off a slick mountain highway and rolled down a grassy slope. The accident occurred during a heavy downpour along a winding alpine transit route.

The vehicle was carrying sixteen passengers on a sightseeing excursion through the elevated terrain of Nagano Prefecture. Heavy rain slicked the asphalt surface, drastically reducing tire traction on a sharp descending curve.

The driver lost directional control as the heavy coach drifted toward the outer edge of the two-lane road. The bus smashed through a wooden guardrail and tumbled several meters down an embankment.

Emergency fire crews and prefectural police units rushed to the remote mountain location via winding access roads. Rescuers used specialized lifting equipment to stabilize the flipped vehicle and reach trapped occupants.

Paramedics confirmed one passenger died from severe impact trauma at the scene of the rollover. Fourteen other travelers suffered varying degrees of fractures, cuts, and contusions.

Medical helicopters airlifted the most critically injured victims to regional prefectural hospitals for emergency care. The surviving driver tested negative for alcohol during initial roadside screenings conducted by prefectural police.

Transport ministry inspectors arrived at the site to review vehicle tire conditions and braking system performance. The mountain highway remained closed to public traffic for several hours while tow trucks hoisted the wreckage.

Authorities urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when navigating wet highland passes during seasonal storms.

Investigators continue reviewing dashcam footage recovered from the dashboard of the crashed coach.
