Rome, Italy—At least three people died and five others remained missing Sunday after violent flash floods and massive mudslides struck isolated mountain villages across northern Italy. Continuous torrential downpours triggered sudden slope failures, sending torrents of mud, rock, and debris crashing through rural alpine valleys.
Civil protection agencies and Italian fire brigades deployed specialized mountain rescue units, canine squads, and heavy excavation machinery to the disaster zone. Rescuers navigated treacherous, mud-choked pathways to evacuate stranded residents and tourists from damaged structural foundations. Emergency medical teams established field triage posts to treat survivors suffering from hypothermia and impact trauma.
Local mayors reported that surging rivers breached concrete embankments with terrifying speed, sweeping away bridges and destroying utility infrastructure. Power and telecommunication lines remained severed across multiple communes, isolating residents from external contact. Military helicopters conducted aerial reconnaissance missions to locate stranded villagers trapped on upper floors and rooftops.
Regional disaster coordination committees mobilized emergency shelters inside municipal gymnasiums to house displaced families and tourists. Meteorological authorities warned that saturated soil conditions across alpine regions elevate risks for secondary landslides in coming days. National government ministers pledged immediate emergency relief funds to support municipal recovery operations.
Search and rescue operations continued under emergency floodlights as specialized teams combed debris fields along swollen riverbanks. Provincial authorities urged citizens to avoid non-essential travel across northern mountain passes while severe weather alerts remain active. Official rescue coordination updates will be issued by civil protection headquarters.
