Barranquilla, Colombia— Two men on a motorcycle were killed instantly Saturday morning when their bike slammed into the rear of a cargo truck that was turning left on Calle 30, one of Barranquilla’s busiest freight corridors, scattering wreckage across two lanes. The crash happened at 7:15 a.m.
Transit police said the motorcycle, a 200cc Pulsar carrying two riders without helmets, was traveling at high speed heading toward the airport. The cargo truck, loaded with construction materials, was making a slow turn into a warehouse yard. The truck driver said he signaled. The motorcycle did not brake. Witnesses said the impact threw both riders 15 meters. One landed under the truck’s rear axle.
“They were going too fast. You could hear the engine screaming,” said a street vendor who saw the crash from his stall. “The truck stopped. The driver got out and just stared. He didn’t know what to do.” Paramedics arrived 12 minutes later. Both riders were already dead. One was 19. The other was 22, according to IDs found in a backpack.
Calle 30 is a death trap for motorcyclists. It mixes heavy freight trucks, buses, and bikes with no separation. No traffic lights at that intersection. No speed cameras. Residents have asked for a signal for two years. The city promised a study. Nothing happened. A transit agent at the scene admitted enforcement is weak. “We lack personnel for this stretch. Bikes overtake on the right constantly,” he said.
The cargo truck driver was taken into custody for testing. Alcohol test was negative. He told investigators he checked his mirrors but did not see the motorcycle coming. The truck’s company said it will cooperate. The motorcycle had expired SOAT insurance and no technical inspection, records show.
By 9 a.m., traffic was backed up three kilometers toward downtown. Motorcyclists weaved through the jam to look at the bodies. Police covered them with tarps, but not before photos circulated on WhatsApp.
The mayor’s office released a short note expressing condolences and promising “enhanced controls.” No new measures were detailed.
The prosecutor’s office opened a file for homicide in a traffic incident. The bodies were taken to Medicina Legal.
The truck remains impounded. The road is open.
