Tuam, Ireland— One person died and another was left critically injured after a fatal two-car head-on crash on the N17 near Mayo on October 22, 2026.
The collision happened at 8:10 a.m. on a straight but narrow stretch between Tuam and Claremorris, a road notorious for serious crashes. Two cars, a hatchback and an SUV, hit head-on at combined high speed. The impact crushed both front ends and spun the hatchback into a ditch.
Weather was dry, visibility good. Gardaí said one car crossed the white line for reasons not yet known. There was no braking evidence before impact. Debris covered 50 meters. Fuel spilled. A passing lorry driver called 112 and tried to help.
Emergency services arrived within 12 minutes. Fire crews from Tuam and Claremorris cut open both cars. The hatchback driver, a woman in her 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The SUV driver, a man in his 40s, was trapped with severe chest and leg injuries and was airlifted to University Hospital Galway.
“The road was dry and straight. This was a sudden, violent impact. One car appears to have drifted,” said a Garda roads policing spokesman at the scene. “We are appealing for dashcam footage from anyone who was on the N17 between 7:45 and 8:15.”
The N17 was closed for over five hours for forensic examination. Forensic collision investigators marked tyre marks and measured crush damage. Traffic was diverted through local roads, causing long delays for school and work commuters.
Locals said the stretch has seen multiple fatalities in recent years despite safety upgrades. A county councillor said, “We have asked for a central barrier here. Another family is destroyed.”
Gardaí have notified both families. The deceased remains at the hospital mortuary for post-mortem. The injured man is listed as critical but stable in intensive care.
The investigation remains open. The road reopened at 2 p.m. Gardai continue to appeal for witnesses.
