Morning Delivery Ends in Crash: Van Overturns on Busy Arterial, Driver Critically Injured, Traffic Blocked

Cape Town, South Africa— A delivery van overturned on a major arterial road and left its driver severely injured on October 21, 2025.

The crash happened just after 8 a.m. on a three-lane stretch used heavily by freight and commuters. The white panel van was loaded with boxed goods. Witnesses said it swerved to avoid a slowing minibus taxi, clipped the curb, and rolled. Boxes burst open and slid across the lanes.

The van landed on its roof. The cabin caved in on the driver’s side. Motorists stopped and tried to right the vehicle but could not. The driver, a man in his 30s, was pinned under the steering column, conscious, bleeding heavily from the head.

Metro rescue and ER24 paramedics arrived in 12 minutes. They stabilized the van with blocks and cut the door with hydraulic tools. It took 25 minutes to free him. “He was trapped by the legs. We had to lift and cut at the same time,” a rescue technician said. Blood on the road mixed with diesel.

The driver was flown by road ambulance to a trauma unit with severe injuries to his chest, pelvis and legs. Doctors said he lost a significant amount of blood and was taken straight to surgery. No other vehicles were involved. No cargo was reported stolen.

Traffic officers closed two lanes for almost three hours. Morning traffic backed up for more than four kilometers. Drivers were diverted through side streets. Delivery schedules for several companies were thrown off.

Police are looking at load shift as a factor. Initial inspection showed boxes stacked high and not strapped down. A supervisor from the logistics company arrived at the scene and told officers the van was within weight limits but admitted the load was top-heavy. Investigators will check tire pressure and brake marks.

The arterial has seen three rollovers this year. Residents have complained about potholes and poor lane markings near the intersection where the van flipped. The city roads department said maintenance was scheduled but delayed.

The case remains under investigation for reckless and negligent driving, standard procedure for single-vehicle crashes with severe injury. The company has not named the driver. His family is at the hospital.
