Morning Commute Terror: 17 Injured as Minibus and Truck Collide on Fanling Highway

HONGKONG — Peak-hour travel turned into a nightmare for dozens of commuters on Fanling Highway after a green minibus collided with a heavy truck, leaving 17 people injured and causing extensive traffic delays across the district.

The severe collision occurred during the height of the morning rush hour as the crowded minibus was navigating a busy stretch of the thoroughfare. According to preliminary reports, the minibus struck the rear of a medium-sized goods vehicle, with the force of the impact crushing the front cabin of the passenger vehicle and trapping several commuters inside.

Passersby and fellow motorists immediately alerted authorities as chaotic scenes unfolded on the highway. Emergency medical services, fire crews, and police officers rushed to the site, working swiftly to extricate injured passengers from the twisted metal wreckage.

First responders treated 17 individuals at the scene for injuries ranging from minor cuts and bruises to severe impact fractures. Ambulances subsequently transported the victims to regional hospitals, including Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital, for urgent medical attention. Medical staff confirmed that while most passengers are in stable condition, at least two individuals are being treated for more serious injuries.

The crash triggered massive gridlock along Fanling Highway, with traffic backed up for several kilometers during one of the busiest travel windows of the day. Transport officials cordoned off multiple lanes to allow emergency crews to perform rescue operations and clear the debris, advising drivers to seek alternative routes.

Law enforcement agencies have launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash. Officers are examining potential factors including vehicle spacing, mechanical integrity, road conditions, and driver reaction times. Both drivers are currently assisting police with their inquiries.

In response to the incident, local transport advocates and district council representatives have raised concerns over road safety standards and heavy-vehicle traffic along key transit corridors during rush hours. Community leaders are urging transport authorities to review speed limits, increase safety checks on commercial vehicles, and implement enhanced driver monitoring measures to prevent similar collisions in the future.
