More Than 100 Canada Revenue Agency Employees Fired for Misconduct and CERB Payments

On January 30, 2026, the CRA announced the termination of 103 employees due to misconduct linked to inappropriate claiming of the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB). These employees allegedly exploited the benefits intended to support Canadians during the COVID-19 pandemic, which provided financial assistance of up to $2,000 per month for qualifying individuals.

The agency's annual report highlighted an overall total of 370 cases of employee misconduct for the fiscal year 2024-2025, with various issues such as insubordination, time theft, and unauthorized access to taxpayer information. From these cases, 266 resulted in disciplinary measures, including 25 terminations and over 150 suspensions without pay.

The report also noted the CRA's ongoing commitment to accountability and vigilance as they continue to investigate claims of wrongdoing. Since June 2023, the CRA has focused its efforts on investigating improper CERB claims, leading to more than 300 employee dismissals overall.

In explaining the gravity of the situation, a CRA spokesperson stated that the actions reflect a proactive approach to uphold integrity and trust within the agency, which plays a crucial role in managing Canada’s revenue system.

The findings have prompted questions about the culture within the CRA and the mechanisms in place to prevent such misconduct. As public trust remains paramount, the CRA is taking steps to rebuild confidence, emphasizing its commitment to transparency and ethical behavior among its staff.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ethical conduct in public service roles, especially during times of crisis when public funds are at stake.
