Leaders and delegates from the European People’s Party (EPP) Western Balkans member parties met in Podgorica, Montenegro, on 17–18 March for an EPP EU-enlargement study visit focused on the prospects for EU enlargement in the region.

The two-day event, titled “EPP EU-Enlargement Study Visit: EPP Family in the Western Balkan Region,” was co-chaired by EPP President Manfred Weber and Montenegro’s Deputy Prime Minister Ervin Ibrahimović, representing EPP’s associate member party Bošnjačka stranka (BS). Participants used the meetings to debate the next steps for enlargement and what the EU accession process means for the six Western Balkan countries.

EPP President Weber said the party remains a “key supporter and a driver” of EU enlargement, arguing that enlargement should advance stability and security for both the EU and partners in the Western Balkans. He also stressed that the process should be based on merit and aligned with the EPP’s view of a “European way of life.”

Ibrahimović echoed the message that EU enlargement is both a shared goal and a strategic interest for the region. He argued that the Western Balkans must continue moving toward EU membership and described Montenegro as ready to take its place as a responsible and integral EU member.

The gathering took place against the backdrop of renewed momentum for enlargement following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which EPP figures said has strengthened consensus across Europe on the need for integration of the Western Balkans—described as gradually proceeding, but “swift” in pace.
