MMX: A Mission to Bring a Piece of Mars's Moon to Earth

MMX: A Mission to Bring a Piece of Mars's Moon to Earth

There is a particular kind of mystery that clings to the small, dark moons of Mars—Phobos and Deimos, named for fear and terror, orbiting the Red Planet in silence while spacecraft have come and gone for decades without pausing to understand them. We do not know where they came from. We do not know what they are made of. They may be captured asteroids, or they may be the shattered remains of a catastrophic collision on Mars itself. In October, a mission will launch to answer those questions, and for the first time, it will bring a piece of a Martian moon back to Earth.

The Martian Moons eXploration mission, or MMX, is led by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency with contributions from NASA, the European Space Agency, the French space agency CNES, and the German Aerospace Center . It is scheduled to launch on an H3 rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center at 04:41 JST on October 20, 2026—which is 21:41 CEST on October 19 . The mission will be the first to collect a sample from Phobos and return it to Earth .

MMX will take about a year to reach Mars, entering orbit in August 2027 and beginning its survey of Phobos in September . After studying the moon from a distance, it will deploy a 25-kilogram rover called Idefix, developed by CNES and DLR. On Phobos, where gravity is less than one-thousandth of Earth's, Idefix will weigh the equivalent of just 15 grams . The rover will scout landing sites and analyze the surface composition and texture, preparing the way for the main spacecraft.

In 2030, the main spacecraft will land on Phobos, collect at least 10 grams of surface material, and pack it into a return module . That module will arrive back at Earth in 2031, sending a sample return capsule down to the Woomera Prohibited Area in Australia before being transferred to Japan for cataloging and distribution to scientists .

The scientific stakes are high. Phobos and Deimos remain "particularly mysterious," as ESA notes, with "huge open questions about how they formed and what they are made of" . The two leading hypotheses—capture of asteroids versus formation from debris ejected by a giant impact on Mars—make different predictions about the composition of the moons. A sample returned to Earth laboratories could finally settle the debate .

The mission carries 11 scientific instruments: seven on the main spacecraft and four on the rover . NASA contributed the MEGANE gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer and the spacecraft's pneumatic sampler mechanism, while ESA and its member states provided instruments, the rover, and communications support through the Deep Space Network .

MMX is, in a sense, a mission about origins—not only of Mars's moons, but of the solar system itself. The samples it returns may hold clues to how rocky planets formed, how water and organic molecules were delivered to the inner solar system, and whether conditions on early Mars could have supported life . The launch window opens on October 19. The answers will take years to arrive, but the journey begins now.
