Missing Persons Crisis: Over 500 Tourists Unaccounted For After Flash Floods Hit Mountain Settlements

Kathmandu, Nepal—Rescue teams combed through tons of grey silt and shattered timber on Wednesday looking for hundreds of tourists trapped by flash floods. Officials reported that more than 500 visitors remain unaccounted for following the disaster in the Rasuwa district.

The torrent hit remote trekking routes and border settlements during peak travel season. Guest houses, bridges, and local access roads vanished into the swollen river system within minutes.

Foreign embassies in Kathmandu activated emergency response cells as lists of missing nationals grew. Pilgrims and independent travelers from dozens of countries were among those caught in the flash flood zone.

"We are mobilizing every available resource to scour these inaccessible gorges, but the scale of the destruction makes progress agonizingly slow," a senior local security official stated on condition of anonymity.

Heavy equipment failed to reach the hardest-hit zones because vital access roads collapsed entirely. Soldiers relied on ropes and aerial reconnaissance to probe isolated debris fields.

Families of the missing flooded diplomatic offices with calls for information as communication lines stayed dead. Rescue coordinators admitted that fading daylight and unstable slopes hampered ground searches.

Emergency shelters filled up with displaced locals and stranded survivors evacuated from higher altitudes.

Search teams push deeper into the mud-choked valleys as the window for finding survivors narrows.
