MELAKA, MALAYSIA — In what eyewitnesses and officials are calling an absolute miracle, a one-month-old baby boy has survived a violent, two-vehicle collision after being thrown entirely out of the car and landing on a soft patch of grass.
The harrowing incident occurred at approximately 10:00 PM on Monday, June 1, along the busy Lebuh Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin (AMJ) highway in Balai Panjang.
According to acting Melaka Tengah OCPD Superintendent Halim Abas, the nightmare unfolded as a car carrying the newborn and his parents was exiting a local petrol station. As the vehicle pulled out onto the main thoroughfare, it collided heavily with another oncoming vehicle.
The force of the impact was devastating. The infant, who was being held in his mother’s lap in the rear passenger seat rather than secured in a child safety seat, was forcefully ripped from her arms. The baby was ejected straight through the car window, soaring through the air before crashing onto a nearby grass verge on the side of the highway.
Terrified onlookers and the frantic parents rushed toward the roadside, fearing the absolute worst. Remarkably, the thick grass cushioned the infant's fall, shielding him from fatal trauma.
Emergency medical teams arrived swiftly at the scene to evaluate the family. Upon assessment, the one-month-old was found alive, having miraculously suffered only minor swelling to his head.
"The baby suffered some swelling to the head, while the mother experienced back pain, and the father escaped entirely uninjured," Supt Halim said in an official statement on Tuesday, June 2. Both the mother and her son were transported to the Melaka Hospital for thorough medical examinations and treatment before being cleared by doctors and allowed to return home later that day.
While the family counts their blessings, local authorities are moving forward with a legal investigation into the mechanics of the crash.
Supt Halim confirmed that traffic police have successfully identified the second vehicle involved in the crash, and investigators are working to piece together the exact sequence of events. The case is currently being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.
Authorities have strongly urged any motorists who may have captured the incident on dashcam footage or anyone with information regarding the crash, to contact investigating officer Inspector Ahmad Adhwa Jamal immediately. The miracle has also sparked renewed reminders from safety advocates regarding the critical importance of utilizing regulated rear-facing infant car seats to prevent children from being ejected during sudden collisions.
