CAMPO VERDE, BRAZIL — What could have been an unthinkable tragedy turned into a miraculous story of escape when a small crop-duster aircraft lost control and slammed into a bustling daycare center in the state of Mato Grosso. Remarkably, despite the facility being filled with 183 children and 40 staff members at the time of the incident, none of the young students or teachers was injured.
The drama unfolded when a Piper Pawnee agricultural aircraft encountered severe difficulty shortly after takeoff from the nearby Campo Verde Airfield. Located merely 450 yards from the end of the runway, the Cora Coralina daycare facility found itself directly in the flight path of the struggling plane.
Surveillance footage captured the aircraft flying at an abnormally low altitude before shearing through the outer wall and window of a classroom.
"Video from inside the building showed the plane crashing through a window into an unoccupied room situated directly between two packed classrooms filled with young children."
The sudden impact sent shockwaves through the building, causing structural damage and scattering debris across the grounds. Teachers and daycare staff acted instantly, evacuating all 183 children—aged between one and five years old—to safe zones outside the perimeter.
Emergency crews and local firefighters rushed to the scene. A dangerous fuel leak was detected spilling from the wrecked airframe, but quick-responding firefighters managed to secure the site and prevent the fuel from igniting.
The 28-year-old pilot, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft, survived the crash. Though the plane broke into several pieces upon impact, the pilot managed to extricate himself from the wreckage. Emergency responders treated him at the scene before transferring him to a local municipal hospital for head and chest injuries. Doctors expect him to make a full recovery.
Local aviation authorities and police have cordoned off the facility to conduct a thorough safety audit and investigate the technical failure that led to the crash.
While the building suffered significant structural damage, community members and parents have expressed immense relief that the room struck by the aircraft was unoccupied, turning a terrifying ordeal into a story of extraordinary fortune.
