Mine Shaft Collapse: Underground Structural Failure in Kerman Province Traps and Kills Two Workers

Kerman, Iran—Two underground workers died Tuesday morning when a deep mineral extraction shaft collapsed inside a subterranean mining complex located in Iran's Kerman Province. The sudden cave-in occurred several hundred meters below ground level as miners were executing structural reinforcement operations along a primary extraction drift.

Heavy wooden props and overhead rock strata gave way without warning, burying the two laborers beneath tons of shifting rubble and loose aggregate. Surviving coworkers outside the immediate collapse zone scrambled to safety before notifying surface management and activating emergency rescue protocols. Provincial Red Crescent rescue teams, equipped with specialized subterranean breathing apparatus and hydraulic shoring jacks, descended into the shaft within the hour.

Rescue operators burrowed through dense piles of fallen rock and compressed earth under perilous conditions, racing against time to locate the trapped men. Medical technicians standing by at the pit head confirmed that both miners displayed no vital signs when extracted from the debris field hours later. State safety inspectors locked down the mining facility perimeter, confiscating operational logs and shift scheduling records.

"We have launched an immediate technical investigation to determine whether geological instability or compromised timbering contributed to this tragic cave-in," stated provincial industry and mining director general Mohammad Reza Hosseini during a press conference at the site. Labor unions renewed sharp criticism regarding inadequate safety standards across private extraction concessions. The mine remains indefinitely shuttered pending forensic clearance.
