Mine Collapse in South Africa: Six Trapped Underground, Two Dead as Rescue Teams Race Clock

Johannesburg, South Africa— The roof gave way at 02:30 underground. Six men were in the stope. Two are dead. Four are still down there, behind a wall of rock that rescue teams have not been able to breach.

The failure occurred at Level 28, in a section where support pillars had shown stress cracking. The mine operator said routine checks were completed last week. The union says otherwise. It said workers filed a safety complaint on Monday about popping sounds in the hanging wall.

Rescue started immediately. Then stopped. Then started again. Gas levels spiked after the collapse, and the ventilation line was severed. Crews had to pull back to re-establish airflow before any cutting could resume. Time was burning.

"Two fatalities have been confirmed, recovery is pending safe access," the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy said in a statement. "Four workers are unaccounted for. A rescue chamber with oxygen is believed to be within 20 meters of their last known position."

Families gathered at the shaft gatehouse. They waited without briefings for six hours. A company manager finally read a three-sentence update and left. One woman shouted after him. He did not turn.

South Africa's mining fatality rate has dropped over a decade, but the numbers hide a pattern. Deep-level, labor-intensive stopes with aging support systems. Contractors under pressure to meet tonnage targets. Inspectors spread thin.

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union called for a Section 54 shutdown of the entire shaft. "We warned about this block. Production continued. Now two brothers are dead," a union official said. The company declined to answer questions about the complaint log.

Engineers lowered a thermal camera down a borehole at 16:00. They got dust. No heat signature. They are drilling a second hole now to feed in a comms line. Every hour that passes narrows the window.

The site remains unstable. A second collapse is possible. Rescue command said they will not risk a secondary burial. Operations are suspended until the hanging wall is pinned.
