Millions of Moms and Children at Risk as WIC Funding Runs Dry Amid Government Shutdown

A major crisis is brewing for America’s most vulnerable families. The WIC program — the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children — could soon run out of funds if the federal shutdown continues.

WIC provides food, baby formula, and nutrition support to over 7 million low-income mothers and young children nationwide. It’s a lifeline that helps pregnant women stay healthy, supports newborn growth, and ensures children under five receive the nutrients they need for proper development.

Normally, WIC operates with consistent federal funding. But this week, that funding stream stopped. The program was supposed to receive an influx of new federal funds on Wednesday, but the government shutdown froze that transfer. Now, the White House warns that WIC may only have enough money to function for one to two more weeks under current conditions.

If Congress fails to reach a deal soon, states could begin limiting benefits or placing families on waiting lists. That means millions could lose access to essential foods like milk, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and infant formula — staples for healthy child growth.

The Biden administration is urging lawmakers to act immediately, calling the situation “urgent and preventable.” The White House emphasized that WIC is not a political issue but a moral one — supporting the nation’s most at-risk mothers and children.

Health experts warn that even a short interruption could lead to lasting harm, especially for infants dependent on WIC-subsidized baby formula. Local food banks are already preparing for a possible surge in demand if WIC benefits are delayed or reduced.

While some states have small emergency reserves, most will run out quickly. For millions of families living paycheck to paycheck, losing WIC support isn’t just inconvenient — it’s catastrophic.

As the political standoff drags on, the faces behind the statistics are what matter most: new mothers, hungry toddlers, and struggling families hoping that Washington remembers them before it’s too late.
