Militants Storm Karachi Rangers Base: Dead and Injured After Explosion and Intense Gunfight in Gulistan-e-Johar

KARACHI, PAKISTAN — A major terror attack struck Pakistan’s commercial capital on Saturday night, June 27, 2026 when heavily armed militants launched a coordinated assault on a paramilitary base, triggering a fierce 90-minute gun battle that left multiple security personnel and attackers dead.

The targeted assault struck the Sindh Rangers’ Bhittai Wing compound in Karachi's densely populated Gulistan-e-Johar area at approximately 8:30 PM. The complex ambush sent waves of panic across the eastern district, which is surrounded by universities and government buildings.

Initial investigations indicate that the operation began when a militant rammed an explosives-laden vehicle directly into the main gate of the Rangers compound. The subsequent blast breached the facility's outer perimeter, allowing heavily armed attackers to storm the premises while throwing hand grenades and firing indiscriminately.

The explosion was felt miles away. "The ground felt like it does when there is an earthquake," said Mohammad Bakhsh, a local restaurant owner, describing the moments before thick smoke and gunfire enveloped the neighborhood.

"Initial investigations confirm the terrorists arrived in a vehicle and entered the compound by ramming the main gate. The Rangers personnel responded rapidly." — Sindh Inspector General of Police, Javed Alam Odho

Paramilitary soldiers inside the base immediately took up defensive positions to engage the intruders, initiating a sustained gun battle. Elite Special Security Unit (SSU) commandos and the Anti-Terrorist Force (ATF) rushed to the scene to reinforce the compound.

Following nearly an hour and a half of intense firefights, security forces successfully neutralized the threat. Officials confirmed that four Rangers personnel lost their lives while defending the compound. Six militants were killed in the exchange, and one injured attacker was captured alive. Emergency rescue groups, including the Edhi Foundation, transported additional wounded individuals to local hospitals.

During the height of the operation, law enforcement completely cordoned off the compound and closed surrounding roads, including parts of University Road and Mosamiat Chowrangi. Residents were instructed to remain indoors, while power outages added to the chaos in adjacent neighborhoods. By late evening, forces began a sweeping clearance operation to ensure the area was secure.

Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a militant faction of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), officially claimed responsibility for the deadly incursion. The attack marks a significant escalation in urban militancy, echoing a February 2023 assault on the Karachi Police Office and highlighting ongoing security challenges facing the metropolitan hub.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has demanded a comprehensive investigation and detailed report on the security breach from provincial police leadership.
