Midnight Meltdown: Massive Inferno Destroys Nearly 30 Buses at Brazil Vehicle Depot

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil — A catastrophic fire tore through a transit garage in the capital of Minas Gerais, decimating nearly 30 passenger buses and lighting up the night sky with a towering column of black smoke. The massive blaze, which threatened surrounding residential neighborhoods, caused extensive infrastructure losses but miraculously resulted in no immediate civilian casualties.

The disaster struck the Dom Cabral neighborhood in the Northwest Region of the city, rapidly turning an active transit depot on Avenida Edgar da Mata Machado into a raging furnace.

According to preliminary field reports from the Military Fire Department of Minas Gerais (CBMMG), the fire did not originate within the facility itself. Emergency dispatchers received initial alerts that a brush fire had ignited in an adjacent vacant lot. Driven by dry conditions and sudden gusts of wind, the flames quickly jumped the perimeter wall, feeding on highly flammable materials inside the transit depot.

Once the fire breached the garage, it found a massive fuel source in the closely parked fleet of municipal transit buses. Within minutes, a series of localized explosions echoed through the neighborhood as fuel tanks ruptured, sending a giant plume of dense, toxic smoke billowing into the atmosphere. The smoke was so intense that it was visible from multiple distinct sectors across Belo Horizonte, sparking widespread alarm on social media.

"The sky went completely black, and the heat was intense even from a block away," noted an eyewitness living near the Dom Cabral area. "You could hear the tires popping and metal twisting as the fire jumped from one bus to the next."

The CBMMG launched a rapid, multi-vehicle response to combat the escalating crisis, deploying five fully equipped firefighting teams alongside specialized command units to the scene.

Firefighters faced a highly complex situation upon arrival. The immediate priority was establishing a defensive perimeter to protect neighboring residential homes and stop the thermal radiation from compromising nearby structural walls. Simultaneously, crews deployed heavy water lines to douse the burning hulls of the vehicles and cool down nearby transit assets that had not yet been caught in the crossfire.

Through coordinated technical maneuvering, responders managed to cut off the fire’s path of advancement, saving a portion of the depot's infrastructure and preventing further fleet destruction. While local emergency services successfully brought the blaze under control and extinguished the remaining hot spots, the incident has dealt a severe logistical blow to the city’s regional transit framework.

With nearly 30 buses completely incinerated or structurally ruined, municipal transport coordinators are working around the clock to adjust timetables and reroute active vehicles to prevent widespread commuting gridlock for thousands of daily passengers.

Civil authorities and forensic teams have assumed control of the site to launch a thorough investigation into the exact origin of the initial fire in the vacant lot. Investigators are looking into whether the initial ignition was an accident caused by seasonal dry heat, or the result of criminal negligence or deliberate arson.
