GUWAHATI, India — A tragic, high-impact collision between two two-wheelers turned a quiet midnight into a scene of horror on Guwahati's recently inaugurated Maharaj Prithu Flyover. The head-on crash, occurring shortly after midnight on Monday, June 29, 2026, claimed the life of one rider and left another fighting for survival.

The fatal incident has once again turned the spotlight on nighttime speeding and traffic enforcement on the city's elevated corridors.

According to the Chandmari Traffic Branch, the collision took place at approximately 12:10 AM on Monday. Traveling from opposite directions at high speeds, a scooter and a motorcycle slammed directly into each other on the multi-lane overpass.

The force of the head-on impact was so severe that both riders were thrown violently from their vehicles onto the concrete deck of the flyover. Both two-wheelers were reduced to heaps of tangled metal, with debris scattered across several lanes.

The deceased has been identified by authorities as Parimal Medhi, who sustained catastrophic internal and head injuries and died on the spot. The rider of the oncoming vehicle, identified as Sushil Neog, survived the initial impact but sustained critical, life-threatening trauma.

Passersby and local residents who rushed to the elevated structure after hearing the sickening sound of the crash immediately attempted to assist the victims. However, the incident quickly sparked local frustration and outrage.

Witnesses and locals at the scene alleged a severe lapse in emergency response, claiming that neither local police personnel nor medical rescue teams reached the crash site immediately following the accident. Good Samaritans on the road did their best to manage traffic around the victims to prevent further collisions before official assistance arrived.

Once traffic police and emergency services finally reached the flyover, Neog was stabilized and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition under close medical supervision. Medhi’s body was recovered and transported to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a post-mortem examination.

The Maharaj Prithu Flyover, which was opened earlier this year to ease traffic congestion in the busy Chandmari and Guwahati Club sectors, has raised safety concerns due to a lack of stringent speed monitoring during late-night hours.

"We are investigating the exact circumstances that led to this tragedy," a Chandmari traffic official stated. "Initial evidence suggests that high speed and a sudden lane violation by one of the two-wheelers caused the head-on impact. We are reviewing any available surveillance footage from nearby approaches."

Police are looking into whether poor visibility, reckless overtaking, or driving on the wrong side of the divider contributed to the fatal crash. Traffic units have temporarily cordoned off a portion of the flyover to reconstruct the scene, and further details regarding the medical status of the survivor are currently awaited.
