Midnight Gunfire: Man Fatally Shot Outside North Bergen Apartment Complex

NORTH BERGEN, N.J. — Local authorities have launched a homicide investigation after a late-night shooting left a man dead outside an apartment complex in North Bergen. The incident, which shattered the quiet of the residential neighborhood, drew a massive law enforcement response as detectives scrambled to gather evidence and track down the shooter.

The North Bergen Police Department responded to multiple emergency calls reporting shots fired shortly before midnight of Monday, June 22, 2026. Residents living inside the multi-story apartment building reported hearing loud, consecutive bangs echoing from the courtyard and parking area.

"I was just getting ready for bed when I heard about four or five distinct gunshots right outside my window," said one tenant. "Then there was a car speeding off, followed by people screaming for help. It was completely terrifying."

Upon arriving at the scene, responding officers located an adult male lying unresponsive on the pavement outside the complex entrance, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers immediately began administering CPR and first aid until emergency medical technicians arrived. The victim was rushed to a nearby trauma center in critical condition but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Authorities are withholding the victim's identity pending the notification of his next of kin.

Dozens of police cruisers, along with investigators from the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit, converged on the property to secure the area. Tactical teams cordoned off the parking lot and complex entryways with yellow crime scene tape, focusing their attention on a section of the pavement where multiple ballistic casings were discovered.

Detectives spent the early morning hours conducting a meticulous grid search of the area, utilizing flashlights to mark evidence and examining nearby vehicles for stray bullet holes or structural damage.

The motive behind the fatal shooting remains unclear, and police have not yet released a description of the suspect or suspects involved. Investigators are aggressively canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and reviewing footage from the apartment complex's security cameras, as well as private doorbell cameras on adjacent streets, to identify any suspicious vehicles fleeing the area at the time of the gunfire.

North Bergen officials and local law enforcement have urged anyone with information, dashcam footage, or security video from the vicinity of the shooting to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office or the North Bergen Police Department. All tips can be submitted anonymously as the active investigation continues.
