Atlanta, United States— Atlanta police locked down a stretch of warehouses on the city's west side early Thursday after gunfire ripped through an underground party, leaving five teenagers with bullet wounds and sending hundreds of minors scattering into the streets.
Officers arrived just after 12:40 a.m. to find chaos outside a brick building near Marietta Boulevard. The party had been advertised on social media as a $20 entry, no ID required. Inside, investigators found shell casings across a makeshift dance floor, overturned tables, and blood on concrete. At least 200 teenagers were inside when shots were fired, according to preliminary estimates from Atlanta Police.
All five victims are between 15 and 17 years old. Grady Memorial Hospital confirmed three were in stable condition by morning, one was in surgery, and one was treated and released. No deaths were reported. Police said the injuries ranged from graze wounds to a chest shot that required emergency intervention.
The motive remains unclear. Detectives believe an argument near the DJ booth escalated. One attendee told officers two groups had been staring each other down for most of the night. A security guard hired for the door, unlicensed and unarmed, said he heard at least eight rapid shots before the crowd stampeded for the exits.
"This was not a permitted event. There were no fire exits marked, no licensed security, no adults in charge," said Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Curtis Martin at a 6 a.m. briefing outside the building. "You have children paying cash to get into a dark warehouse. That is a recipe for exactly what happened."
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the property had been cited twice this year for code violations. City records show the owner had been warned about after-hours gatherings. Neighbors said cars had been lining the industrial block every weekend for months, with loud music until 3 a.m.
Atlanta police released no suspect description Thursday morning. Investigators are pulling video from two nearby businesses and asking for phone footage from inside. A Glock pistol was recovered in a dumpster two blocks away, but police have not confirmed if it was the weapon used.
Parents gathered outside the police precinct on Jefferson Street before dawn. Some said they did not know their children had left home. Atlanta Public Schools officials said counselors would be at three high schools Thursday where students were believed to have attended the party.
The building remains sealed with crime scene tape. Detectives plan to interview the promoter, a 19-year-old man identified through social media flyers, later today.
