Mexico’s first out gay mayor, Benjamín Medrano Quezada, was shot and killed on July 7 after exiting an ice cream shop in Guadalajara. The 59-year-old, who previously served as mayor of Fresnillo (2013–2015) and later worked as a federal deputy, was reportedly attacked multiple times and the suspect fled on a motorcycle. Police have not confirmed a motive or arrests. Medrano had also faced allegations of alleged fraud, which his family called a political hit job.
